Lean Production Control and Inventory Management

Controlling production within a lean environment is a struggle for most organizations embarking on a lean transformation. Many organizations continue to utilize MRP scheduling to manage their production even after they have implemented some lean concepts; the results are often disappointing. When an organization implements lean concepts such as 5S, continuous flow cells, SMED, etc., it needs to have a lean production control system to tie everything together. Flow and inventory between operations must be controlled utilizing the lean concept of pull.

This month we feature three articles that should help you better understand the concepts of lean production control and inventory management. First, we give you a case study in which a pull system was put in place for an injection molding and assembly operation. Our second article talks about the basics of lean production control using pull. Finally, in our third article, we talk about a lean production planning tool we call the interval or EPEI.
