One Piece Flow

One piece flow is sometimes considered synonymous with lean. It really isn't; there is much more to lean than one piece flow. However, one piece flow is the ideal method of production and flowing work of any kind because it reduces lead-time dramatically by eliminating delays in a process.

This month we feature three articles that deal with one piece flow. The first article defines one piece flow in the context of the Toyota Production System. The second talks about the steps needed to achieve one piece flow. The third and final article is a brief case study of one piece flow implementation.
