5S: Organizing the Workplace Welcome to August 2011 edition of our monthly newsletter, Learning to Lean. In this month's edition, we are talking about creating an organized workplace through 5S. Announcements Space is filling up very quickly for our Lean Manufacturing Certification program in Orange County. The program will run from August through November. Click here for online training information. 5S: Organizing the Workplace 5S is a Japanese system for creating and maintaining an organized, disciplined workplace. In English, we usually use the terms Sort, Set-in-Order (or Straighten), Shine, Standardize, and Sustain (or self-discipline). The 5S system is a way of doing work, not simply a 5 step process. It can be used in manufacturing, clinical, and administrative environments. This month we feature three articles that deal with 5S. The first article talks about how 5S can be used in a healthcare environment and links to a video example. The second talks about multiple situations that can benefit from 5S. The third and final article is a discussion on sustaining a 5S system. The materials referenced in this newsletter will teach you more about lean and six sigma.
