When we talk about value stream mapping, we are usually talking about mapping all of the major steps from customer order to delivery of a product or service. We then look at a number of summary metrics; two fo the most common are value-added time versus total lead time. This technique, while popularized by manufacturing companies, can be used in the healthcare industry and on any business process. We are featuring 3 articles on value stream mapping in this edition. The first deals with its application in multiple industries. The second deals with cross-functional process mapping of administrative or office-based processes. The final article gives a traditional view of value stream mapping as it applies in manufacturing. The materials referenced in this newsletter will teach you more about lean and six sigma.
